Main Design Considerations and Prospects of Contemporary Tall Timber Apartment Buildings: Views of Key Professionals from Finland

As a result of increasing urbanization, the need for sustainable housing, e.g., tall (over eight-story) timber apartments, is in Finland. Leveraging experience key Finnish professionals plays significant role transition and expansion housing as an essential part forest-based bioeconomy. This interview-based study will serve to fill gap by examining views with residential construction, using Finland case study. The 21 interviews primarily highlighted that: (1) construction cost was most important parameter affecting architectural structural design; (2) critical consideration influencing overall design reported be system selection design, followed city planning client control; (3) assessed building’s form main dimensions mass parameters affected construction; (4) considerations that needed developed were bracing solutions fittings, structures intermediate floors, load-bearing vertical/partition structures; (5) preconceptions, lack cost-competitiveness, expertise/actors considered major obstacles; (6) future apartment buildings education, marketing public awareness, land delivery conditions, unification administration, financial support; (7) building complex subject requires close collaboration, especially between architect, designer wood supplier. paper help us understand boundary conditions development needs solutions, importance parameters, prospects, measures obstacles apartments from perspectives professionals, thereby aiding sound projects.
